Happy National Pizza Day!
Our family loves pizza, especially those that can still eat the
doughy {filled with gluten} variety. For
those of us that are now gluten free it has lost some of its’ magic appeal. Cauliflower crusts just aren’t quite the same
as traditional pizza goodness.
Because we live way out in the country there is no pizza
delivery services. Instead, we stock up
on frozen pizzas, make our own, or buy it from the gas station in town. Before moving out of the city I had no clue
that the gas stations sold whole pizzas ready to eat. They do and they are yummy! In fact, many of my kids claim they are their
favorite pizzas.
Millie enjoyed pizza and during her treatment she often
asked for pizza-pizza as she called it. As
you know pizza can be made into
any shape, but certain brands have distinct shapes. Millie went from only
eating 'square pizza' slices to needing every piece cut into triangles. She also needed to have the same number of
slices as her siblings even though she did not plan to eat more than a few
bites. Never fear…mama figured out to
slice her single slice into the appropriate number of slices. That little trick was
a simple funny thing we did to make life easier and the tantrums fewer.
On a more
serious note, the reason Millie wanted more pizza was she longed for the
previous time of everyone eating the same things and getting an equal share. Kids are all about fair you know! As much as she longed for sameness, she also
longed to enjoy what foods she had. She
remembered that pizza tastes really yummy—until your taste buds are destroyed
by chemotherapy. So many of her favorite
foods she would ask for, only to take a bite and push them aside. They no longer tasted like her memories of ‘good
food’. It is so hard for little children
to understand. Their memory says this is
yummy but their body refuses to believe it.
They lose weight and often end up on feeding tubes or a g-tube in Millie’s
case.
All that to say
if you take time out today to enjoy a hot, cheesy pizza, say a prayer for all
the kids who wish pizza tasted good still.
These cancer fighters need all the prayers they can get!
~~Oh, (tongue in
cheek) you can also pray they figure out how to make cauliflower as yummy as
pizza dough for the rest of us gluten free people.
~Because of Millie~
Blessings sweet friends…
