Today I played with my toys. We had some friends come visit. My tummy started to hurt! I laid down on mommy’s bed and started to cry.
Mommy called my daddy on the phone. I heard them say, “hospital” but I don’t know what that is.
When daddy got home, I got to go on a car ride with him and mommy.
We went to the doctor first, but they sent us to a big building across the street.
I heard them say, “Xray”, but what is that?
Daddy and I went into a little room and laid me on a cold table for a picture. I was so glad daddy could stand beside me.
Soon I was ready to go home but instead a lady came and told us to sit and watch cartoons in a waiting room. These cartoons were not what I like!
Wait, they are calling my name from that desk at the front of the room. I don’t know them, but my mommy is going to ask what they want. Maybe we can go home now?
No, instead they are taking me into another little room. They ask me questions, but I am not going to answer them! Mommy helps tell them my name and that my tummy hurts. The nurse lady puts a strange light on my finger. This is scary, I start to cry. They have a machine that goes in my ear, one on my arm, and are making me stand on a big metal thing. Why can’t I go home?
We are moving again, down the hall past a lot of doors into a tiny room with a bed. Daddy lays me on it, but I am not going to sleep. Why are we here?
Oh no, here comes that lady nurse again. Now she brought a man with her. Who is he? He is asking mommy lots of questions. Mommy is shaking her head as they look through all the cabinets. What are they getting out?
Wait, they are taking my diaper off. I am gonna kick and scream. I don’t like this!! Why are mommy and daddy helping them? They put some funny looking medicine where I don’t want it. Now my tummy hurts worse! Now I need to dirty my diaper, but they are making me sit on a funny blue sheet of paper. Yuck! I made a huge mess. Mommy and the nurse lady are cleaning me up.
That doctor man comes back saying they are going to do a lab. I wonder what that is?
He also feels of my tummy. He pushes hard and it hurts again.
The nurse lady gets a shiny thing and comes for my arm. Mommy and daddy are holding me down again. This is so scary! “OWIE!!!!!” that lady poked my arm with that thing. I don’t understand what they are doing to me. Why is everyone hurting me and why does mommy and daddy keep helping them?
I’m so very tired now that as I lay here and cry, my eyes are growing heavy. I haven’t stayed up this late in a long time. “Daddy can we please go home?”
****This Millie's Voice Series is written from the perspective of Amelia “Millie” as a two-year-old the night we took her to the hospital the first time. She would go on to be diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma just two days later. The diagnosis was constipation that night until the lab work came back that her liver enzymes were elevated. A referral was then made for us to go to OU Children’s Hospital and to see a liver specialist. They were not able to see anything concerning but sent us for more lab work and an abdominal ultrasound. We left the hospital that day after hearing our baby’s abdomen was filled with cancer. We buried her in July 2020****
Can you only imagine what these babies think as everyone they know and even people they don’t know are given permission to hurt them?
Every adult that comes close wants to look at their bodies, touch them, and usually inflicts pain.
Each procedure they endure brings more trauma.
Please help spread awareness for the sake of the children.
~Because of Millie~
Blessings sweet friends…
